Octaves are a very important feature used in many types of music,
flea commonly uses octaves in songs like higher ground and tell
me baby etc... If you play a note then go up 8 tones its an octave.
The easy way to remember is two strings across, two frets down
and theres the octave. these are the most common octaves.

The f's the E's the g's the a's the b's the c's the d's

G 4 5 7
D 3 2 5 7
A 2 3 5
E 1 0 3 5

The list goes on with all the sharps and flats of notes and even
higher notes further down the fretboard. but you get the idea.

These sound great for a funk song- example: get a mate to play
the guitar chords over the top

    F# G E B

    S P S P S P S P S P S P S P S P
G 4 4
D 4 4 5 5 2 2
A 2 2
E 2 2 3 3 0 0

Or use octaves to make a song more interesting In otherside flea
instead of the usuall

G
D
A 333333333
E 5555555 3 1111111 3 0 333333333

changes in the last chorus up an octave on the f, c and g to get this:

G 55555555555
D 3333333333 5 0 5555555555
A 3 5 0 3 0~
E 555555555

You can use this when making a song

ENDINGS can always be made better by using a small octave trick

say you end on a B (fret 2 on the a string) slide down 12 frets (one
octave) and let it ring sounds lovely and can be done with all notes

G
D
A 2 \ 14~
