Restless Natives by Big Country From the movie "Restless Natives" and the CD "Restless Natives & Rarities" Also the B side of the singles "Look Away" and "Heart of the World" Tabbed by Colin Dawson - colin_g_dawson@hotmail.com July 2002. Updated March 2005. For more information about Big Country visit www.bigcountry.co.uk and www.bruce-watson.net Restless Natives is a cult movie with very rare videos selling for up to $150US on e-Bay. It's about to be released on DVD for the first time ever, nearly 21 years after it was released in the cinema. The movie features stunning Scottish scenery, an amusing plot and a fabulous soundtrack by Scottish rockers Big Country. If you've never seen this movie, buy it - you won't be disappointed. This is one of Big Country's best early works IMO but also one of the more difficult to play live because of the number of overdubbed guitars. You'll need to retune your guitar if you want to play along to the full version of the track; the extract that's near the start of the "Rarities" album is in Dm but the longer version and the version on the B side of "Look Away" are midway between Dm and Ebm so you'll need to tune your guitar up a quarter of a tone. The first part of the e-bow intro is audible on the video but doesn't feature on the B side. You can hear part of it at 16:50 in the RN&R version but you'll need the video or DVD and a keen pair of ears to get the whole part. It's towards the end of the movie before they set off around Edinburgh on their motorbike, just after Will says "Margo's going to be on that bus" The version of the song in the movie soundtrack uses a lot of chorus on the bass line during the intro, whereas the other versions add distortion to the bass. Another difference between the movie version and the others is the placing of the dialogue. "One last time to Strathault". Not that this matters if you're trying to play it live, as I doubt whether you'd want to include the dialogue. It's about 10 minutes from the start of the movie. Please yourself whether to include this part. It gives a good opportunity to put down your e-bow and get a plectrum so I recommend you include this part. Together with the next part of the intro, it also gives an opportunity for the second guitarist to switch from acoustic guitar to electric. It's difficult to explain though. Best I can do is to say that the first echo needs to arrive half way between the second and third notes and from there on an echo occurs half way between each note which makes you sound like you're palying twice as fast as you really are. Work on emphasising some notes and playing others more softly to create the effect. This is a good way to start the song when playing live as it sets the speed; this song is hard enough to play at normal speed but an over-enthusiastic bass & drum section can make life rather difficult for most guitarists. The downside is that you miss the excellent E-Bow part if you play it this way. Bruce uses the same delay effect and mutes the strings for the last verse in the "Live in Berlin" version. colin_g_dawson@hotmail.com July 2002 / March 2005
