The progression :

G, G, G, G, C, C, G, G, D, D:|

Here's when the going get's tough
Your'e supposed to play the intro melody and rythm at the same time FAST.
This is the way i try do it,take it or leave it!
                                       G-rythm(The banjo answers)
e----3-----3---3---3---3---3---3--3---|-----

G----0-----0---0---0---0---0---0--0---|-----
D------------------------0------------|-----
A-----------0----2---3-------3---2----|-----
E--3----3-----------------------------|-----

Then play the same idea thruogh the whole progression
Now please give a suggestion to a way to do the banjo rolls on guitar!!!

Listen to the recording by Eric Weisberg (banjo) and Steve mandel (guitar) on the album named "Duelling banjos" (also released as "New dimensions in banjo and bluegrass")on Elektra(Eks 7238 vinyl).
Dueling banjos is not the fastest tune on the album!!

On eletric i play the banjo strum something like this( pick and fingers, tele style) let all string ring as long as possible (indacated with ===)

     G
  e-------------------------------------------
  B----------------3===--------5---------3====
  G-----------0========--------5--0===========
  D----------4-h-5=====-5====--5--4-h-5====5==
  A-------------------------------------------
  E-------------------------------------------
Right hand 3 3 3
             2 2 2
             p(pick) p p p p

Any suggestions and corrections are welcome.

Duelling Banjos
The rolls

This is a atemt to make banjo style rolls on the guitar. Play finger style or with pick n fingers.

Here s the three first rolls, the ones the banjo answers with.

     G
e--------------------------------------------------
B-------------------0-------------0----------------
G---------0----------------7-----------------------
D----------------7-----10-----10-------------------
A------10---10-------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------

   C
e----------------------0-----------------0---------
B-------------------------------8------------------
G------------------7-------10-------10-------------
D------10--10-10-----------------------------------
A--------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------

  D
e--------------------------------------------------
B--------------------------------------------------
G--------------------------0---------0-------------
D-----0-----0----------4--------7---------4--------
A--------5--------7--------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------

This is the roll just before they go into warp speed.

e--------------------------------------------------
B----0----------0----------0-----------------------
G------------7------5----------0------------------
D--------10-------------7------------7-------------
A--------------------------------------------------
E--------------------------------------------------

Here's a roll for the last lick before warp speed.

e--------------------------------------------------
B----------------0-------0-----0---------------0---
G---------0----------------------------0-----------
D------------7--------------7--------------7-----7-
A----10--------------10------------10--------------
E--------------------------------------------------

You can use the these rolls in the breaks. I use pick and finger
to play this style, it lets me switch between rolls and flatpicki'n.
I'll try to make "Guitar banjo rolls" suggestions for the whole thing.
Mail me if you got any qestions. I'll post the rest as soon ill get to tab
it.

Good luck!

Chris, you're correct. I believe the confusion here is because Don
Reno recorded the *original* version of the title song with Arthur
Smith back around 1952. Here is the chronology:

1952 - Arthur Smith writes "Fuedin' Banjos" (note the plurality of
"banjos") and records it featuring himself on tenor banjo (taking the
lead-off part) and Don Reno on 5-string (playing the "echo" part).
Great record!

Late '50s - Carl Story and the Rambling Mountaineers record the same
song, using a mandolin for the lead-off part, and titled it "Mocking
Banjo" (note the singularity of the word "banjo").

Early '60s - The Dillards record the song using Dean Webb on Mandolin
and Douglas Dillard on 5-string, and title it "Dueling Banjo."

Finally, Eric Weissberg (banjo) and Steve Mandel (guitar) record the
"Duelin' Banjos" (is this title plural? I can't remember...) track for
the Warner Brothers movie "Deliverance." This is put on an album with
a bunch of other songs recorded by Eric Weissberg and Marshall Brickman
which had previously been recorded under the title "New Dimensions in
Bluegrass."

Arthur Smith sues Warner Brothers, claiming the song was "stolen"
>from him, Eric Weissberg tells the judge that all three songs are one
and the same, Don Reno and Arthur re-create the original song in the
courtroom, and Arthur wins a sizeable settlement from WB.
