I've worked out a simple arrangement for guitar, transposing it from D to G (I'm playing a classical guitar and can get to the 15th fret!). All the usual notations apply: / for slide, h for hammer on, and roman numerals denoting the barred fret. Hope you enjoy this song as much as I do. Lines: 115 Message-ID: Reply-To: jjohnson@Eng.Sun.COM NNTP-Posting-Host: ui.eng.sun.com A few weeks ago, someone posted a TAB for "Ashokan Farewell," the Jay Ungar tune that was used in the Ken Burns' Civil War special. I never saw that show, but have been playing the tune since the mid-Eighties, when I learned it from a guitar/hammer-dulcimer duet tape I bought from Rick Ruskin after getting a lesson from him. After the Civil War show aired, people began perking up whenever I played "Ashokan...", saying "Oh, that's that great Civil War tune!" So here is my version of the tune. An important thing to keep in mind when playing it is that TAB just tells you where to fret a string and when to pluck it, but it doesn't tell you *when* to fret and when to move from a fret. For this tune (as for most), the operative rule is: Fret as early before the note as you can, and leave it there, with the note sounding, until you need that finger somewhere else. I may record this for Tape VI (if there is a Tape VI), so people can hear what this version sounds like. Enjoy, JJ ===========================>8 clip here 8
